Monterrey band Kinky has developed a successful formula of combining modern rock and electronics with Northern Mexican styles, much like Nortec Collective from Tijuana except with instrumentalists instead of DJs. The band relentlessly tours Mexico and the west coast of the US and earned a reputation for one of the most exciting, crowd pleasing shows around.
Reina the most recent full length collection of new songs by the band doesn’t break any new ground for them, its another lively party album. As with their two previous albums KINKY and Atlas, the band creates short, infectious bursts of beats, horns, accordions, and guitars with lyrics in Spanish or English(or both). As always, the tropical influenced rhythms by drummer/percussionist Omar Gongara stand out, especially on Una Linea de Luz and Uruapan Breaks. Their song A Donde Van Los Muertos is the song that brings the best elements of modernity clashing with tradition and poetic lyrics.
A Donde Van Los Muertos
Sassy is a five song collection the band released this year. The collection contains three short instrumentals and two “interesting” 1980s covers. A version of new wave staple Mexican Radio originally by Wall of Voodoo is somewhat predictable, besides translating some lyrics to Spanish. Automatic originally by the Pointer Sisters is kind of a strange choice, and aside from a rap interlude, fairly faithful to the original as well. The instrumentals sound like outtakes from Reina.
Uruapan Breaks

La banda hace unas giras frecuentemente en México y la costa oeste en EEUU y gana una reputación por espectáculos muchos excitante y divertido.
Reina, la colección más reciente de canciones nuevas por la banda no rompe ninguna tierra nueva, es un otro disco animado para fiestas. Como sus discos antes, KINKY y Atlas, la banda crea explosiones infectivas de ritmos, trompetas, acordeones, y guitarras con letras en español e ingles. Como siempre los ritmos tropicales por baterista Omar Gongara destacan, especialmente en Una Linea de Luz y Uruapan Breaks. Sus A Donde Van Los Muertos es la canción que junta sus elementos mejor de modernidad chocando con tradición y letras poeticas.
Sassy es una colección con cinco canciones la banda desde esto año. Las canciones son tres sin letras y dos clásicos desde los ochentas. Una versión del clásico new wave Mexican Radio por Wall of Voodoo es un poco predicable con algunas letras trasladaron a español. Automatic, originalmente por las Pointer Sisters, es una selección extraña y muy fiel, aparte de un intermedio de rap. Las canciones sin letras parecen como fragmentos desde Reina.
